March 7, 2011

On this day in 1850, Senator Daniel Webster gave his "Seventh of March" speech endorsing the Compromise of 1850 in order to prevent a possible civil war. The compromise was intricate and complicated and kept a temporary peace, staving off the War Between the States for just a little while longer. When I read today’s passage from Matthew, it brings home how complicated life can be and how difficult discernment is. We have no alternative but to trust that if we do our best to follow God’s path each and every day, then our failings will be redeemed and our efforts will be worthwhile.
Namaste! Amen!
The Readings
Tobit 1:3; 2:1-8
Psalm 112
Matthew 10:34-39
‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.
